“Opening the split with “Met beide benen in het niets” (“With both legs in the nothing”), Witte Wieven’s offering of atmosphere and beauty finds a balance between the delicate and the powerful. The duo of Carmen Raats and Sarban Grimminck straddle a unique dualism in black metal, one of lofty ambiance and subterranean metallic darkness, resulting somewhere above the surface, just enough to touch the sky. At the opposite end is Reiziger, whose “Dauw & daad” (“Dew & deed”) finds itself in the depths of advanced darkness. Though airy like its split partner, Reiziger is cavernous, like the tumultuous organ musings of one who lives beneath the cathedral. Even so, the obscure turmoil found within Reiziger’s half of Vlucht echoes the ideas of flight — that of a bat deep within a cave. Not all flight gets to see the stars.”
